10 Ways to Have a More Sustainable Wedding

On average, weddings in the United States produce around 400 pounds of garbage and 63 tons of carbon dioxide according to this article in the Chicago Tribune. These impacts on the planet has lead people, including us, to find more sustainable and eco-friendly ways to make their big day special while keeping the wellness of planet in mind.

As a wedding planner the waste I see at the end of each event fills me with guilt. I value the planet and do as much as I can to take care of our Mother at our home. I am committed to offering green solutions in my business as well. I hope to partner with vendors and clients that align with my values and take measures to reduce impact on the Earth. Below are 10 ways to have a more sustainable wedding, along with local Michigan recommended vendors who also value sustainability.


USE BIODEGRADABLE DISHWARE

Use biodegradable dishware. According to this article the use of plastic is the “heart of the issue.” An alternative to plastic could be using compostable and eco-friendly dishware, use the options provided by caterer or rent, and provide reusable glassware for the bar.

HAVE A PLAN FOR EXTRA FOOD

More than not, there is leftover food that is often times just thrown away and gone to waste. One thing you can do to avoid this is have a plan on where this extra food can go. For example, taking it to a shelter where it can be eaten. Another great way to be sustainable with catering is to make sure they are locally sourced and organically produced. Avoid the use of balloons, confetti, exotic flowers, and some decorations. Finding sustainable, eco-friendly materials as décor for your wedding can be an alternative. When it comes to the florals, shop locally and seasonal flowers. RENTALS

Going the eco-friendly route with decor, linens and even is a great way to keep items out of a landfill. Ask your planner if they have an inventory of rental decor or contact local rental companies. ECO-FRIENDLY WEDDING VENUES

The most eco-friendly wedding venues might be well insulated, use solar power, sustainable building materials and are committed to recycling and reusables. Look for a venue that combines the most green initiatives. Outdoor weddings tend to be more green, but be aware of disposable usage. Also, having the same venue for both the reception and ceremony, or making sure the hotels you use follow eco-friendly policies.


REDUCE CO2 EMISSIONS
