Postpartum Maternity Style
I’ve had this post in the works for sometime. After giving birth, as most new moms do, I struggled to feel good in my clothes, with, still changing body. I knew things weren’t going to go back immediately, but I was aching for some feeling of my pre-pregnancy body. There is a lot to consider when dressing as a new mom, you want to feel comfortable, need breast feeding-friendly garments and outfits that will function while lifting and possibly wearing your baby. For me, I my body went back fairly quickly, of course just three months later, I’m not quite where I was before baby or where I want to be. I want clothes that fit, but don’t want to invest in a temporary wardrobe.
I polled my new mom friends and gathered their tips, tricks and favorite outfits they wore postpartum. I pulled from my pre-pregnancy wardrobe and bought a few pieces for where my body is now. Here is the capsule wardrobe I came up with.
blush blouse: Nordstrom - this relaxed button up is blousey and flattering and buttons up making it perfect for breast feeding.
button up shirt: Madewell - another great button up, looks perfect with jeans or layered with overalls
sweater: Madewell - when you’re heading into winter, you need the perfect sweater. This one is on-trend with the rust color and balloon sleeves.
bralette: Calvin Klein - I don’t wear nursing bras everyday, but I almost never wear underwires anymore. A few great bralettes, plus some nursing pads, are essential.
nursing bra: Nordstrom - of course a good nursing bra is necessary.
turtleneck: J. Crew - A turtleneck for layering works great under the blazer, sweater, jumpsuit, overalls and even when paired with jeans.
plaid blazer: Nordstrom - I always love a blazer, it dresses up an outfit and hides the parts of your body you’re not quite loving.
leopard shirt dress: Nordstrom - A shirt dress is always a great choice. This dress is comfy and the tie waist makes it flattering for whatever stage you’re at.
jumpsuit: Madewell - jumpsuits are the must have garment, and this one is such a happy jolt of mustard. This suit has an elastic waist, perfect for a changing body.
sneakers: Urban Outfitters - great for running those new mom errands
mule loafer: Everlane - when you need something easy, but a little more polished.
booties: Marc Fisher - You can’t make it though winter with out a great pair of black booties. These are equal parts chic and comfy.
skinny jeans: Old Navy - these jeans are high-waisted, which is perfect for holding you in. They have just the right amount of stretch, plus the price is great if these are just a pair of transitional jeans.
wide leg jeans: American Eagle - A great alternative to the skinny jean. With a forgiving fit in the leg and a high waist, these are a super chic option.
overalls: Madewell - After much internal debate, I pulled the trigger on overalls a few years back. They are great for casual, comfortable weekends and for carrying around a baby. Though not the most breast feeding friendly.
