One Room Challenge Week 4 // DIY Oversized Art

My One Room Challenge studio upgrade is moving along quite well! I have all the major work finished, now a couple little projects and lots of organizing left to do. If you haven’t been following a long, you can go back and check out week 1 - my plans, inspiration and before photos, week 2 - all about transforming this space with paint, and week 3 - the DIY oversized peg wall for much needed organization.

Today I’m sharing the one of the few pops of color in this space. Outside the rugs, this room is very much a white box, purposefully. I wanted it to have an industrial feel and also there is always so much mess and junk scattered around, I wanted this space to be calm and blank. This make over is on an extreme tight budget. Almost everything will be repurposed, or shopped from my house, except for some paint and some rad art by local friends. One of those items shopped from my house, is a large, 3’x4’ canvas I had hanging around. I bought it a two summers ago and had a vision that never came to fruition. I decided that the canvas would be blank no more and instead would be the focal point of my new and improved studio. I flip flopped over what to paint on it. Then I came across a copy cat tutorial by Nadine Stay of an original piece by Kacey Hughes and knew I wanted to do something similar.

I painted the base, with the leftover paint from my powder room, “My Sweetheart” by Behr. It was actually a little too white, so I swirled in some light pink acrylic paint I had on hand. It added dimension and made it the perfect light peachy-pink color I was going for.

Next I mapped out the white blocks. I worked through the math as I went. The white blocks are painted in the wall paint color “Polar Bear” by Behr.

Next, I mapped out the black and blush blocks. Using my eye and what felt right, no magic formula.

I also knew I wanted to add my own take on this piece and add dimension by embroidering a section. I happened to have some yummy ochre floss and layered a block on top of the blush.

Finally I added a frame. using 1x2 pine board and my trusty brad nailer.

So happy with how this turned out and the lovely hit of color it added.
