One Room Challenge Week 5 // Minimal Toy Storage
We are rounding third and headed for home here on our One Room Challenge basement upgrade. See where I’ve come from on week 1, week 2 I shared how I removed the drop ceiling, week 3 I reveal the painted fireplace and DIY skateboard art and week 4 I shared my DIY side table. I set out to transform our 80’s finished basement into a functional family rec room, complete with lots of toy storage. The space is a big open room, and I wanted it to be two defined spaces, a kid zone and a family space, without adding an actual divider. Today I am sharing my storage solutions for the kid space.
I used to have all my styling items on this shelf under the stairs, but decided to move all my stuff to a new cabinet on the other side of the room and to fill these shelves with toy storage. I used Ikea Kuggis large and small boxes, as well as large and small versions of these wood and fabric bins from Target. I love this situation for several reasons, first that when I walk down the stairs any toy mess that is left out is out of my line of sight. I also think the under the stair area has a tiny bit of a fort feel, so I thought the kids would be into that. Finally, I was able to fit lots of inclosed storage boxes, so toys are organized and hidden.
Since I tucked all the toys away into these inclosed storage boxes, I knew I needed to label each box so when my four year old is looking for a specific car, I have a better chance of finding it. However said four year old can’t read. So I came up with a genius solution that is functional, but also looks cute. I took an Instax photo of the items in each box, and added an old school label to the photos to identify what is in each box.
Oliver requested a rainbow on the wall. Of course I wasn’t keen on disrupting my all white wall vibes, but I also wanted to honor my son’s rare request. I painted a rainbow under the stairs using the color palette from my skateboard art project, Sherwin Williams, Bayview Coral, Comfort Gray, Shimmery Pink, Trellis Yellow, Falkland Blue
I found a cute coatrack to hang behind the door and house all the dress clothes.
Don’t forget to follow along with the other participants as we head into the big reveal.

We made it! Another One Room Challenge in the books! I am just so happy with how this bright and modern kids bath turned out! Started from a dated 80’s bathroom with a blue formica countertop and carpet and gave her a major glow-up in the form of a complete renovation. Now - classic selections with a special layer to make it a happy, updated space for my kiddos.
