My bedroom was a room in my home that hasn’t gotten much love since we moved in. I don’t think I bought one new item for this space. And it looked fine, but I certainly wasn’t excited about it. I set out to do a mini makeover to restore my excitement for our bedroom. Budget was high priority here, so I knew there weren’t going to be major purchases. I also had a few DIY art ideas in my back pocket.

Here’s what I did.

Here is the before. Certainly not bad. A fine starting point. But needed a little zjooshing.

BEFORE

The big challenge with this room, in my book, is the hunter green carpet. It’s not in our budget to change it out right now, so I am forced to veer from the palette of the rest of the home as to not clash too much. I have a large 9x12 rug that covers most of the room. The large rug is layered with a smaller vintage rug, which distracts the eye from the green.

The brown art piece was a DIY using a canvas as a base. I cut and taped shapes onto the canvas creating dimension and covered with plaster. Then I painted it “Potter’s Clay,” by Behr, which I think is a lovely compliment to the neutral white tones above the bed. I found the beautiful textured pot at a beautiful local shop, Stoffer Home and planted my fig tree. Another favorite find was the brown vase on the bedside table, collected while shopping around Traverse City, Michigan last week.

I followed this tutorial for the art above the bed and am thrilled with the results. I think it adds such a beautiful contrast next to the sconces.
